Frequently asked questions
How many letters are in the Korean alphabet?
Hangul has 24 basic letters: 14 consonants and 10 vowels. Counting the 5 double consonants (γ² γΈ γ γ γ ) and 11 compound vowels (γ γ γ β¦) that you also need in order to read, the full set is 40 β that is what this site covers, one page each.
How long does it take to learn Hangul?
Recognising the letters takes most learners a few days to two weeks. What takes longer is reading them as syllable blocks at speed, and the sound changes that happen where blocks meet.
Why are Korean letters written in blocks?
Each syllable is packed into a square block of 2β4 letters, read left to right and top to bottom inside the block. It keeps Korean text visually even and marks syllable boundaries without spaces inside a word.
Is this site free?
Yes. Every letter page, the audio and the interactive practice app are free in the browser. There is a mobile app too if you would rather practise offline.
